HISTORY & ORGANIZATION
Yonsei University is regarded as a leading education institution in Korea. The university's origin can be traced back to two academies: Severance Medical College and Chosun Christian College. Inaugurated in 1885 by Dr. H. N. Allen, Severance Medical College commenced its first class with sixteen students in 1886, establishing the foundation for medical education in Korea. Led by missionaries, Chosun Christian College (CCC) was established in 1915 and initiated programs in commerce, humanities, mathematics and physics, agricultural studies, and religious studies. The commerce program at CCC is the first business-related education program in Korea, and serves as the foundation for Yonsei University School of Business (YSB). In 1950, the College of Business and Economics was inaugurated and followed by the Department of Business Administration in the College in 1958. Subsequently, in March 1965, the Graduate School of Business was launched as the first Korean graduate-level (part-time) business program. To meet the growing needs of an executive education, the Advanced Management Program was launched in 1976. In September 1998, Yonsei took another pioneering step by creating the Global MBA program, which was the first full-time English MBA program to be offered in Korea.Yonsei University established the School of Business in 2003 to strive for global excellence in business education and research. Both undergraduate and graduate business programs are relocated from the College of Business and Economics to Yonsei University School of Business (YSB). Since then YSB has achieved significant progress in several areas. After applying for the AACSB accreditation, YSB has actively increased tenure-track faculty members on a significant level and has launched an extensive MBA program, ranging from part-time to full-time tracks. Moreover, in 2006, YSB’s MBA program was selected as one of the top four programs nationwide with the promise of sponsorship by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development for seven years.
Today, YSB offers four major degree programs: Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Business Administration, and Ph.D. in Business Administration. In 2007, YSB had an enrollment of approximately 2400 students in the degree programs with 60 full-time, tenure-track faculty members. Commencing with ten graduates in 1919, YSB has since then matriculated more than 25,000 alumni, as of 2007. YSB alumni are presently working in various industrial sectors globally and have retained prominent roles within corporations and in the development of the nation as a whole.
